Our Company
History
Back in the Day…
Although electricity was available in the 1880s, rural regions rarely had access. Thankfully, the establishment of the Rural Electrification Administration in 1936 empowers people to purchase power as a community. Thus, electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) are born.
1970s
During a time of fuel shortages and high prices, 39 EMCs establish Oglethorpe Power Corporation, a not-for-profit cooperative, to own and operate power plants and transmission infrastructure on behalf of the EMCs.
1990s
Always forward-thinking, Oglethorpe Power Corporation divides into three separate not-for-profits, each equipped to support different parts of the power grid. Georgia Transmission is established to manage the transmission infrastructure.
2000s
Georgia Transmission expands its operations and facilities with a continued focus on serving local communities. These efforts lead to a new industry record for the lowest number of outages per EMC member.
Today & Beyond
A national leader in electricity transmission excellence, Georgia Transmission continues to partner with local EMCs and provide Georgia with reliable, affordable energy.
Serving Georgia's EMCs
Georgia Transmission is an electric cooperative owned by the 38 Georgia EMCs it serves. We are responsible for planning, building and maintaining high-voltage transmission lines and substations that carry power from generation facilities to the local EMC.
Supporting Our Communities
Our commitment to local communities is more than a nice idea. Whether it's our CEO working alongside others to pull old tires out of a river or our company partnering with a statewide nonprofit, these efforts are investments in Georgia's future.
Rivers Alive
Every year, our employees support community cleanup projects for Rivers Alive, organized by Hands On Atlanta. Our first year, we collected more than 2,000 pounds of trash, including 480 plastic bottles, 17 tires and one manhole cover.
Million Mile Greenway
As a charter member of Million Mile Greenway, we support their work to help connect communities with trails and greenways. We modified our award-winning transmission line routing software to help them connect shared greenspaces.
STEM Program
As part of our mission to empower local communities, Georgia Transmission supports the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program at Tucker Middle School – the first middle school in Georgia to earn the STEM certification.
Corporate Run/Walk
Every year, employees support the Kaiser Permanente Corporate Run/Walk. Along with thousands of others, our people participate in this downtown Atlanta 5K run that supports many charitable organizations.
Habitat for Humanity
Inspired by their work to support communities and their vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live, for our 20th anniversary, we came together as a company to build a Habitat for Humanity home.
And More...
We believe generosity is a universal responsibility. Our employees support the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and many other organizations. We also partner with our local EMCs and, together, back the important work of these non-profits.
